A 21-year-old Minnesota caregiver has been accused of multiple felonies after allegedly assaulting two residents at a group home. Authorities arrested the man after he voluntarily turned himself in, leading to charges including third-degree criminal sexual conduct. If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison, a $60,000 fine, or both.
According to the man’s own report, he has worked for some time with Habilitative Services Inc., an organization that provides in-home and residential support to adults with serious intellectual and physical disabilities. He said he became physically abusive with residents of the group home inside of six months of his tenure with the company, which began in January 2017. After this time, he said the abuse escalated into sexual misconduct.
All in all, the man admitted to raping two of the residents of the group home. Both of these alleged attacks happened at his place of work, though the complaint does not name the victims. HSI has said the man is no longer employed by their organization and that they are working with law enforcement to investigate these alleged incidents.
Of course, felonies of this nature are taken very seriously by the state of Minnesota, and if the man is found guilty, he will face the full measure of criminal punishment. However, a variety of factors can influence the decisions of an individual, and even though the man confessed to police, this cannot be used to infer his guilt. His criminal defense attorney will carefully review the facts of the case in order to determine how best to proceed in his defense during his trial.
